Animated Maps
Designing Context, not just Coordinates
Animated maps aren’t just about showing where things happen. They’re about how and why they matter. Every choice in a map—what’s highlighted, what’s simplified, what’s left out—shapes the story it tells. As a motion designer, it’s about balancing clarity and detail: using scale, icons, and color to guide the eye and crack open complex ideas. Whether zooming in for detail or panning out for context, these maps turn data into something digestible, visual, and surprisingly impactful.

INTERSPOT — Korridore des Lebens
For a series of wildlife documentaries by Interspot, I created animated maps that anchored the stories in a rich, satellite-inspired look. The maps highlight topographical features like mountain ranges and rivers, alongside administrative elements such as country borders and city markers, helping viewers stay oriented while keeping the visuals engaging. The real challenge? Smoothly hatching from wide global overviews into detailed local terrain, all while balancing realism and clarity at every zoom level.

Maps That Do More Than Point the Way
JTI — Holy Screen Media
Not all maps need to be geographic to guide a story. In a spot for JTI, I used a clean, abstract map to visualize geolocation-based marketing techniques, where icons took center stage and the map served more as a subtle backdrop. In contrast, for a documentary about espionage in Vienna, the map wasn’t about orientation but atmosphere: styled like an old military chart, it set the tone and grounded the narrative in a covert, tactical world. Sometimes maps aren’t just about where, but how it feels to be there.

Terra Mater Studio — Youtube Channel
For Terra Mater’s YouTube Channel, I scrambled up a variety of animated maps, each showcasing different topographical scales and types of information. Keeping things sunny-side up with Terra Mater’s signature paper and cardboard textures, plus a dash of stop-motion charm, every map feels delightfully tactile and handcrafted. The color palettes shift thoughtfully to match each story: think earthy yellows that shell out the Colorado River’s vibe, or deep wood tones that warm up the pellet consumption tale. These maps don’t just serve facts; they bring each theme to life with a fresh, natural flavor.
